Leggere "Tavolo 18" è come posare lo sguardo su un avvincente diorama della società italiana, e in parte olandese, dal dopoguerra ad oggi, in una sorta di viaggio balzachiano dove un'umanità frenetica e coraggiosa cerca di lasciarsi alle spalle le sofferenze e le tragedie di quel tempo. il punto di vista dell'intera storia è quello della romana Nicoletta, che agli inizi degli anni '70 lasciò tutto per seguire lui, l'uomo della sua vita, andando a vivere ad Amsterdam, dove insieme, aprirono un ristorante. Da quel momento il locale diventa un cinescopio, attraversato da una moltitudine di personaggi "normali", ma con una carica umana contagiosa, capaci di offrire solidarietà, come di compiere piccole e grandi meschinità. Enzo, Luigi, Giuseppe ecc. . . Dalle agili e coinvolgenti pagine emerge prepotente l'entusiasmo di Nicoletta per il suo ristorante, ma soprattutto l'amore per il padre, la madre, gli amici di un'infanzia dura ma allo stesso tempo gioiosa in una Roma neorealista. La passione travolgente per il suo uomo, per i figli e nonostante le enormi diversità per la stessa Olanda, che ormai considera la sua casa.
